Every parent wants the best for their child, especially when it comes to education. That is why when living in Bangkok, you should prefer international schooling.
International schools in Bangkok may be truly international, which means that they follow a foreign curriculum instead of the outdated local Thai curriculum. Some schools are only known as international because they offer classes in English – they still follow the Thai curriculum, which means they aren’t truly international, just bilingual.
There are three basic types of international schools you can choose from:
Tier 1 Schools
These are clearly for the most privileged, with tuition fees from 400,000 to 1,000,000 per year. Chosen by the elite of the elites, Tier 1 schools are certified for their quality by the national ONESQA, along with owning multiple international accreditation. With their highly qualified, predominantly Western teaching staff and plethora of facilities and extracurriculars, these are a popular choice among anyone who can afford them.
Tier 2 Schools
The tuition is a bit lower here, from 200,000 to 800,000 baht. Accreditation is by ONESQA and at least one international body. The teachers at Tier 2 schools may be foreign or Thai, but they are well qualified and efficient. International schools in Bangkok at the Tier 2 level have mostly Thai students.
Tier 3 Schools
The fees comes down at 80,000 to 300,000 baht in Tier 3 international schools in Bangkok, which are owned by a single person or a family. The staff at Tier 3 schools is not known for its foreign qualifications, and the schools may only hold accreditation from ONESQA if they are recognized at all. However, this does not make for a good way to judge the quality of education in these schools.
With the Tier system being quite subjective, sending your child to an international school in Bangkok that is not Tier 1 shouldn’t be any cause of worry. There are plenty of success stories of alumni from all tiers. Not all of us have Tier 1 level of money, so it’s okay to do what suits you best!
